The longevity lock, also known as the "Baijiabao lock", which a baby wears on its hand or neck, expresses people's good wishes that the lock will bring health and good luck to the child. The history of the longevity lock The predecessor of the longevity lock was the "Longevity thread", which can be traced back to the Han Dynasty (206BC-220AD). According to historical records, every household hung silk thread of five colors on the lintel (upper door post) to ward off bad luck during the Dragon Boat Festival . During the Wei-Jin and Southern and Northern Dynasty period (403BC-581AD), the silk thread as the accouterment worn on the arms of women or children, appeared not only during the Dragon Boat Festival but also during the Summer Solstice (10th seasonal division point, marking the sun's position at 90?°on the ecliptic). At that time, people thirsted for peace because of frequent wars, diseases, calamities and shortages. So they knitted the five colored silk thread into a rope, then put it around their wrists to keep away evil and illness in the hope of prolonging life expectancy. The colorful threads were given various names such as "longevity thread", "five-colored thread", "prolong life thread" and so on. This custom continued to the Song Dynasty (960-1279). Not only did it prevail among the people, but also was introduced to the court. Besides women and children, men also wore it. On the eve of the Dragon Boat Festival, the emperor would personally award longevity threads to the ministers for them to put on during the festival. Called "bead knot" or "colorful thread knot" in the Song Dynasty, they were more complex because the maker added a pearl and other things to the accouterment apart from the colorful threads. At that time, a lot of shopkeepers made a living by selling such accouterments in Beijing . The custom changed during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), as there were few adults adorning themselves with the ornament and it was regarded as an ornament mainly to be worn by children who were one year old. Gradually, the longevity thread developed into the longevity lock. What is the origin of the compass its history? Interestingly, there appears to have been a delay of nearly 1400-years between the first recorded instance of a compass being used to indicate direction and the device being used by sailors for navigation. The reason for this is that the compass was first used in China in the 4th Century BC in feng shui, the Taoist method of environment organisation. The first compass was a rudimentary device, a simple piece of lodestone floating on water that pointed south. Following on from this, flat pieces of iron were used instead which, when polarised by lodestone - a naturally occuring magnetic ore - indicated a north-south direction. This was then replaced with a needle by the 6th Century AD. Reports of chinese sailors using this early compass surfaced around the 12th Century, detailed in Zhu Yu's "P'ingchow Table Talk". The first recorded instance of the compass being used in Europe occured around 1190. This was similar to the early chinese lodestone model, but by the end of the 13th century, the English had mounted a needle on a pin, the basis of the compass as understood today. Little was understood about the device and the superstitions of the time meant that some captains even believed that if their crew ate onions this would impact upon the magnetism. By the 17th century, the needle was changed to become a parralelogram shape which was easier to mount upon the pin. In 1745 an englishman, Gowin Knight, developed the Knight compass, an improvement in that the steel needle would retain its magnetization for longer periods of time what is purple clay? Purple clay's unique properties make it ideal for brewing tea. The quality most immediately apparent is the attractive color of purple clay. This color, sometimes augmented by natural pigments, is never hidden on YiXing teapots by glazes. Similarly, the inside of YiXing teapots are always left uncoated. The porous nature of purple clay absorbs the flavor, smell, and color of the tea that is brewed in it. Over time, YiXing teapots develop a seasoning from repeated use, making the tea brewed from a well used teapot a special treat. For this reason, most people will dedicate a single flavor of tea to a specific YiXing teapot, so that the seasoning is not disrupted by cross-brewing. Are the coins ancient? Yes, The coins were collected from china civil, which produced in ancient chinese special dynasty, such as guangxu, tongzhi and so on. Affordable Auction Management Solutions @ inkFrog
